‘Chuffs Nest Lodge’ vintage handmade dolls house manufactured circa 1930.
Owner’s comments:
This is a charming back opening house with all original floor and wallpapers. I called it Chuffs Nest Lodge as the only accessories that cam with it were five little black birds with red beaks, which I am told are Chuffs.
I have rewired the house throughout, and when removing the old wiring it was clear that the wiring was installed during, not after construction.
The earliest references I can find to dolls houses built with lighting are, Miss Moffets House in the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated 1890. Also a Christmas window display of houses in Hamleys toy shop also in 1890. These were all powered by lead acid batteries.
Lighting in dolls houses did not become common place until the 1920s using torch bulbs powered by zinc carbon batteries.
